When 22-year-old Christian Ferdinand confessed to the grisly murder of 14-year-old Shaniesha Forbes in January 2013, he reportedly asked investigators if he could get “some kind of community service,” the New York Post reports.
According to the Post, Ferdinand suffocated Shaniesha because he believed that she was pregnant, then burned her body before stuffing her into a suitcase and tossing the body into Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Gerritsen Creek.
On Monday a jury decided in an hour that Ferdinand was guilty of murder, and he now faces up to 25 years to life in prison.
“I don’t think God should forgive him. He doesn’t deserve forgiveness. I hope he rots in jail,” Shaneisha’s older sister, Shaquana Forbes, said outside the court, according to the Post.
Ferdinand reportedly told investigators in his confession that Shaniesha tried to fight him off but it “wasn’t much of a struggle; she was little.” Before the murder, Shaniesha had sent him a text telling him she was pregnant, but she also told him she would not get an abortion because her mom was religious, the New York Post notes.
“My n—ga, are you serious? Kill that s—t,” Ferdinand texted back, according to court documents.
Later, Ferdinand and Shaniesha were hanging out at his cousin’s house, where he became angry when the teen would not stop talking about the baby. Holding a leather pillow over her face, he smothered her until she stopped resisting, according to documents.
In the end, investigators discovered that Shaniesha was not pregnant at the time of her death.
