Nekesa Mumbi Moody of the Associated Press is reporting that two of Malcolm X's daughters, Ilyasah and Malaak, are upset that the late Manning Marable's book Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention alleges that their parents' marriage was strained and their mother — and possibly their father — were unfaithful.
The marriage "was definitely faithful and devoted because my father was a man of impeccable integrity, and I think that most people, if they're not clear on anything, they're clear that he was moral and ethical and had impeccable character," Ilyasah Shabazz said Wednesday. Malcolm X's daughters did not speak to Marable for the book — which draws upon thousands of interviews, government documents and private papers — and have not read the book.
The book has been in the top 10 on Amazon.com's best-seller list, and the print run has been increased from 46,000 to 70,000, according to Viking, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). Viking spokeswoman Carolyn Coleburn said the publisher had no comment about the criticism from the daughters.
Well, it's pretty random that they haven't read the book, yet feel compelled to discuss it publicly. Marable spent 20 years of his life writing the book, while the daughters have spent many years protecting the image and memory of their parents. It stands to reason that they would disagree with the contents of the book. We just wish that they would read it first to add more weight to their displeasure with the book.
