Mahershala Ali, the man who breathes new life into everything he touches (his roles, your fantasies, various printed shirts and blazers) is coming back to hopefully, probably, maybe resurrect HBO’s True Detective series.

HBO dropped a teaser last night for the anthology series’ third season, in which Ali will star as Wayne Hays, a detective from Northwest Arkansas.

As KOMO News reports, the premiere cable channel has kept a tight lid on plot details, but says the new season will be centered on “a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades.”

In the teaser video, we can see the Oscar-winner playing three versions of himself, one as a younger detective, one approaching middle age, and one as an old man, meaning that the third season will likely bear a greater resemblance to the critically acclaimed first season of True Detective (let’s be real, who even watched the second?), which relied on a fragmented narrative told through multiple timelines.

“My whole brain is a bunch of missing pieces,” Ali, as Detective Hays, says in the trailer.

Starring alongside Ali will be Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Josh Hopkins, Scott McNairy and Mamie Gummer.

Like your wedding date with Ali (hampered, no doubt, by the fact that he’s very very much married), there is no premiere date—yet—for the next season of True Detective, but HBO promises us new episodes are coming our way January 2019.
