When Magic Johnson retired from professional basketball in 1991 and announced to the world that he was HIV positive, at the time it was considered a death sentence. Yes, there was medicine that could prolong his life and make him more comfortable than those without his wealth, but eventually the disease would take hold.

However, 33 years later, Magicβs businesses are thriving, he owns several pro sports franchises and is one of the richest Black people in America.
But how did he do it? How has he prolonged his life?
He credits his wife, Cookie Johnson, his doctors and advancements in medicine and treatments with helping him defy the odds.
βEvery time I go to the doctor and my T-cell count is off the charts, thatβs when I know Iβm good,β the Los Angeles Lakers legend told PEOPLE.
Though Johnson wrapped up his pro career in 1992, he still has the mindset of an elite athlete, staying in the best physical condition a 64-year-old former basketball star can by working out more than most people half his age do.
βIβm stretching, and then I work out for two hours. Then Iβm in the office all day, so as long as I can continue, and I have been at that pace, itβs been a blessing,β he said. βSo Iβve done my part, the medicineβs done its part, and then my wife stays on me to make sure Iβm doing my part.β
Johnsonβs answers probably arenβt as exciting as conspiracy theorists would hope, but it really does come down to taking care of yourself and believing in modern medicine. Contrary to what certain corners of the internet would have you think, it appears Magic doesnβt have the secret cure to HIV β he just listens to his doctors.
Do I think the NBA Hall of Famerβs incredible wealth affords him a healthcare privilege us regular folks canβt imagine? Yes. When it comes to healthcare, moβ money equals less problems. Unfortunately, no matter how many times Johnson tells the world that heβs just following doctorβs orders, there will always be some people who believe crazy conspiracy theories about the billionaire having access to a secret cure, or wild experimental drug.
Canβt we just leave the conspiracies behind and be happy that this man has not only survived, but has also helped advance research and treatment so others can also live long healthy lives?
