With bated breath we all waited for Madonna to do a befitting tribute to Prince Rogers Nelson, her “contemporary,” at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards.
But even before the Material Girl hit the stage, there were (legitimate) gripes that black women, whom the recently departed pop icon championed his entire life, were excluded from the event.
Finally, for the last set during the awards show, Madonna got off a lots-to-be-desired set of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” written by Prince but made famous by Sinead O’Connor.
Not only did black Twitter go in, but BET wickedly released a (since-deleted) tweet after the performance with the words, “Yeah, we saw that. Don’t Worry. We got you. #BETAwards.”
Seems as if Madonna was feeling a way about that and couldn’t leave well enough alone. On Saturday she decided to plant her own shade tree with an Instagram post that read, “Wearing the jacket Prince gave me without permission from BET.”
OK. But that still doesn’t make up for that performance, Madge.
