Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album, “GNX,” still has social media buzzing. But it seems that many hip-hop fans still can’t get past one line the Compton MC made on the first track of the album.
On “wacced out murals,” Lamar addresses several topics, including betrayal and authenticity. Although the song is not about one particular person or entity, fans seem to be stuck on one particular bar in the song: “I used to bump Tha Carter III I held my Rollie chain proud/Iront, I think hard work let Lil Wayne down.”
Along with the initial reaction to the surprise album, this bar has everyone discussing if Lamar was dissing the New Orleans legend or was simply being vulnerable about his feelings.
It seems that Wayne himself took it as a diss, as he responded to the line Saturday morning, writing on X, “Man wtf I do?! I just be chillin & dey still kome 4 my head. Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all. No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed. On me. Love.”
This odd interaction between the two was spawned by the announcement that Lamar would be headlining the Super Bowl halftime show in Wayne’s hometown of New Orleans.
At the time, fans were split on the decision made by the NFL and Roc Nation. Some felt that Lamar was the obvious choice since he’s been the hottest and most discussed rapper of 2024.
Others felt Wayne was more deserving since he’s a legend in hip-hop who’s never been put on a stage like the Super Bowl and it would be perfect since it’s taking place on his turf.
This time around, fans were split again on whether Lamar’s line about Lil Tunechi was a diss, or simply a statement, leading to everyone sharing their opinions on social media.
Others even implied that a rap battle would start between the two with some saying that Lamar would make easy work of Wayne and others saying the opposite.
One person wrote, “Please let Kendrick learn quickly that Lil Wayne is not Drake.”
Someone else posted, “Lil Wayne better chill before Kendrick drop ’Meet the Carters’ or some sh*t.”
What do you think? Was Lamar dissing Wayne and does Weezy have the right to be angry about the line?
