Aaron Vickers was 19 when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in South Stockton, Calif., in 2002. In 2000 he had written a letter for a school assignment addressed to his future self, and his parents recently received that letter, according to the New York Daily News.
Daryl Hutchins, Vickers' former teacher at Plaza Robles Continuation High School in Stockton, had promised his students that he would send them their letters in 10 years' time. So when he found out about Vickers' death, he tracked down his family and sent them the four-page letter.
According to the Daily News, Hutchins found the family through a memorial group on Facebook.
"I had never felt his presence like that—in the past 14 years—but I felt like he was sitting right next side of me," said Vickers' mother, Deanetta, after receiving the letter.
His sister, Tyra Vickers-Kearney, said that in the letter, her brother predicted that in 10 years a black man, or maybe a woman, would be president, the Daily News reports.
Aaron Vickers is survived by his son, who has his name and is now 13 years old. Vickers’ killer was never caught.
