Trekkies everywhere are throwing up “Spock” fingers today after news of Leonard Nimoy’s death. Nimoy’s wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, told the New York Times that Nimoy died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In January Nimoy tweeted that he wished he had never smoked:

Nimoy’s last tweet came earlier this week, which was definitely on a somber note:

Nimoy made his debut as Spock on Sept. 8, 1966. His career as Spock spanned almost 50 years. He last appeared in the 2013 J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek Into Darkness.

It doesn’t make sense to write “Rest in peace” for someone whose motto was “Live long and prosper.” But Nimoy will live on forever in people’s memories.
