Kim Kardashian—who recently helped commute the sentence of 63-year-old Alice Johnson—is using her privilege yet again to bring attention to a prisoner she believes has been wrongly convicted.
Saturday, Kardashian posted on Twitter asking California Gov. Jerry Brown if he could test the DNA of Kevin Cooper. Cooper has been on death row for 33 years and will face lethal injection for the murders of four people, including two children, the Daily Mail notes.
Over the years, Cooper’s legal team has been fighting to have his case re-examined. David Alexander saved Cooper from the death penalty in 2014, just hours before he was to be executed. He and Cooper are asking for a new DNA test because they believe the evidence was tampered with. Even five judges agreed that he was wrongfully convicted.
The victims in the incident were Douglas and Peggy Ryen, their 10-year-old daughter, Jessica, and 10-year-old Chris Hughes, who was staying at their house in the Los Angeles suburb of Chino Hills.
Eight-year-old Josh, the couple’s son, was the only survivor, even though he had his throat slit. When describing what happened that day, he mentioned three white men or Mexican men, and then later changed his story to say that he’d seen a single black man.
“All we’re asking for is testing; [we’re] not rushing to demand release,” Alexander said.
Kardashian was credited with the release of Johnson earlier this month, so we’re wondering if this will be a new trend and if she’ll be able to help with Cooper’s case.
