Unless you have been living under a social media rock for the better part of the last ten years, you’ve probably heard of Kid Fury. He is the co-host of the popular podcast The Read, but before that, he was a successful vlogger on YouTube with his “Furious Thoughts” videos. The internet sensation can now add another title to his list: comedy series producer.
Variety reports that Kid Fury, whose real name is Gregory A. Smith, is currently developing a half-hour comedy series for HBO that will be executive produced by none other than Lena Waithe. Talk about black excellence!
According to Variety, the as yet untitled project will be focused on a 20-something sarcastic black gay man named Greg who is living with undiagnosed clinical depression as he attempts to adult in New York City.
Kid Fury will write and co-executive produce the series. Jason Kim will also co-executive produce, and other executive producers for the series include Chloe Pisello, David Martin, Jon Thoday, and Richard Allen-Turner of Avalon Television.
Kid Fury’s popular podcast The Read recently celebrated its five-year anniversary with a sold-out live show at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. The show tours as a live show across the United States and Europe.
Kid Fury can also be seen in a guest appearance on season 2 of the Netflix series Dear White People.
Lena Waithe has had a magical year of her own. In addition to her first-look deal with Showtime—the network on which her critically-acclaimed drama series The Chi airs—Waithe also appeared in Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated sci-fi homage to video games, Ready Player One earlier this year. She won an Emmy last year for her writing on the Netflix series Master of None, and she is currently writing both an upcoming television series for TBS called Twenties, as well as a film titled Queen & Slim, which will star Daniel Kaluuya and be distributed by Universal.
