All long-running TV series go through reboots. Look at “Law & Order,” “NCIS” and “The Voice.” In “The Real Housewives” franchise, it’s common for cast members to come and go, but a full-fledged reboot wasn’t a real possibility until the “New York” franchise recently changed things up and found success. Now signs are pointing to a new direction for “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.”
On the red carpet at Sunday’s 2024 Grammys, “RHOA” cast member Kandi Burruss revealed that she’s planning to leave the series. She told Variety, “I decided I’m not coming back this year. It’s been 14 seasons, and they allowed us to sit around for a little too long. During that time I had started working on a lot of other things, and I got some nice big projects coming soon. So I’m super excited about those things.”
It looks like the “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” could be undergoing some additional changes as star Kenya Moore discussed her future in the franchise during an appearance on “The Tamron Hall Show.” In response to Kandi’s comments, Kenya confirmed that the producers have been taking their time on deciding the next steps for the show.
“They were thinking about, after last season, recasting the show, figuring it out and it’s just taken forever,” Moore said. “And so, we started making moves. She started doing other projects, I started doing this project. I’m working on Kenya Moore Hair Care…I opened a hair salon in Atlanta [and] I started focusing on other things.”
When Hall asked if she was planning to return to “RHOA” next season, Moore was a little secretive, saying, “I think they will be announcing that shortly. For me, I am just focusing on the new for Kenya Moore.”
And as it always does, talk turned to one of “The Real Housewives” most famous name: NeNe Leakes. Kenya revealed that they all get asked about Nene a lot, but, per her boss, “that door is closed.”
Though nothing has been confirmed yet, it certainly feels like ‘RHOA’ is on its way to a big change. The real question is what direction could the new version go in? Will they go younger? Will they lean into the culture of Atlanta more? Or could they just call it quits in Atlanta and move on to a new city? It’s one of the most popular series in the franchise, so producers certainly should tread carefully with whatever they do.
