Many of us grew up with Kel Mitchell, so he’s more than one of our favorite actors, he feels like part of the family. When news broke that he was hospitalized on Tuesday, a lot of fans were worried about the Good Burger 2 star. On Wednesday, he confirmed the news, thanking fans and friends for their support, writing, “That scare was real, but so was the support. With the grace of God and the skill of the medical team, I’m now on the road to recovery at home.”
Now the actor is opening up about what caused him to rush to the emergency room. On Friday, alongside an Instagram video where he explained his medical condition, the Nickelodeon star wrote, “For those curious about recent events and my well-being, appreciate the concern and sending love your way. This should bring some clarity.”
Kel revealed that he was shopping when the “whole room started spinning.” Thinking he was dehydrated, he got food and water, but he quickly realized things were much more serious.
“When I did that, the whole right side of my arm and my leg was numb, followed by me not being able to swallow and that’s when I panicked,” he said.
Mitchell drove himself to the hospital, a move he admits wasn’t the smartest, but he was “panicking.” Once he got to the emergency room, he failed mobility tests on his arm and leg, revealing, “I could not move my right arm, my motor skills was not working.” This led to fears of a very serious issue, however, after staying overnight for a battery of tests, doctors discovered that his symptoms were caused by a previous injury.
“What we feared wasn’t what it was,” he said. “It was actually a bulging disc I had from a prior injury pressing up against the nerve, mimicking all those symptoms that I was going through.”
Thankfully, Kel is back home and recovering with his family. He once again thanked everyone for their support, even those saying he just needed orange soda in his IV.
Ever the professional, he also took a moment to note that the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike meant there would be lots of Good Burger 2 content coming. He reunites with longtime friend and comedy partner Kenan Thompson in the sequel, premiering Nov. 22 on Paramount+.
