Most stars would love a chance to work with celebrity stylist Law Roach, the “image architect” responsible for some of Zendaya, Kerry Washington and Celine Dion’s hottest looks. But after working with actress Keke Palmer, the recipient of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s (CDFA) first-ever Stylist Award realized he wasn’t the best person to help her get dressed.

Fortunately, there was no love lost, and the two have remained great friends. In fact, Roach and Palmer reunited at an October 2 discussion for his new book, “How to Build a Fashion Icon: Notes on Confidence from the World’s Only Image Architect.” where they talked about how their working relationship has evolved over the years.

Roach explained that although their initial partnership “years and years ago” didn’t quite work out, the pair reignited their style alliance in 2023, when Palmer was pregnant with her now-one-year-old son Leodis “Leo” Andrellton. However, Palmer wasn’t exactly feeling the award-winning celebrity stylist’s vision for Palmer’s mom-to-be look.

“And I’m like, ‘Oh, let’s show the baby bump,’” Roach said. “I’m bringing all these clothes and I could never get the clothes right. And one time she actually called me, she said, ‘You might be the best stylist in the world, but you’re not the best stylist for me.’ I f——— love it.”

But while some creatives might be annoyed, Roach says he wasn’t offended that Palmer didn’t agree with the direction he wanted to go.

“I love it, I love it,” Roach said. ”But she was right though, because in my mind I had this idea of how I wanted to present her. I wanted her to be proud of the baby bump and show it off.”

In fact, he added that he was proud of her for speaking up for her own sense of style. “And it was her personal prerogative, she didn’t want to give it to the world yet. So I will always love you,” she said.
