When you think of Versace, inevitably, a few things come to mind, chief among them creative director and muse Donatella and the Medusa that adorns the Italian fashion house’s logo. And these are exactly the icons Teyana Taylor was channeling when she dressed to impress for Sunday’s Versace Pre-Fall 2019 show at the American Stock Exchange in New York City.
Vogue captured the entertainer living the dream of any Versace lover, as she chose from an array of items from the label at their midtown showroom in New York City. She quickly settled on a body-baring sheer embroidered and beaded floral tulle blouse and matching hosiery, paired with a leather miniskirt, cinched to fit her enviable curves.
“The aesthetic is see-through, skin out a little bit, the detailing, everything is fab,” she told Vogue. “I’m loving my outfit. Everything they had was amazing, but this was the one that stood out most.” (And honestly, if I’m built like Teyana Taylor, I’m cinching and body-baring everywhere.) The pièce de résistance? A pair of coordinating sandals with a beaded blocked heel, extending the look of the hosiery on Taylor’s endless legs.
If it sounds extra, that’s just fine with Taylor, who told Vogue’s cameras her goal is to astound. “How do I times it by 10, how do I make it my own, how do I make it extreme?!?” she asked.
How’s this for extreme: To pay homage to the current creative head of Versace, Taylor donned a custom “Donatella blonde” wig that hung well below her waist, which stylist Porscha Stewart-Weeks (in collaboration with Slim Keish) then styled into locs to give what Taylor called a “Donna-dusa”-like edge. The look was finished off with a flawless bronzed visage by Renee Garnes (using Danessa Myricks makeup), who called it “modern golden goddess rasta queen.”
It was a good look—and a fitting tribute to the label whose shoes she was wearing the night she met husband Iman Shumpert.
“I turned him down that night, but three years later we wound up getting married after that, and it was those Versace heels!”
