As The Root reported when news broke of the filmmaker’s hospitalization, celebrities gathered on social media to express their emotions, reminisce on the experiences they’ve had with the filmmaker and offer love, support and prayers to him and his family.

Chestnut also shared a clip from his recent interview at The D.L. Hughley Show, where he reminisced about the film and talked about fans approaching him to this day to recite the hugely popular and emotional “Rickyyyy!” scene.

That same supportive energy was at the 18th Tribeca Film Festival as well, as Method Man of the Wu-Tang Clan led the audience in prayer for the filmmaker during their post-show at the Of Mics and Men premiere.

Singleton made history in 1992 when, at 24-years-old, he became both the youngest person and first African-American to be nominated for Best Director (Boyz n the Hood) at the Academy Awards.
