Jesse Williams is to be honored at Sunday night's BET Awards.
Williams, 34, is being honored with a Humanitarian Award for his activism and work with Black Lives Matter.
“Williams uses his celebrity platform to shine a light on the injustices of our society and became an outspoken advocate of the Black Lives Matter movement,” BET said in a press release.
“During Ferguson, [Mo.,] he stood with thousands of protesters to make sure that unarmed teen Mike Brown’s death was not in vain and used every outlet at his disposal to make sure that the message behind the Black Lives Matter movement was heard,” the statement continued. “Writing articles for CNN and The Huffington Post expressing his frustration with the system, Jesse has proven to be a true pioneer of our generation and is a refreshing new face of activism during a time of crisis in this country.”
Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross will host the show, which airs live Sunday, June 26, at 8 p.m. ET. Follow @TheRoot on Twitter to live-tweet along with us!
