Jeralean Talley of Inkster, Mich., made headlines in May when she officially became the world’s oldest woman after the deaths of Misao Okawa of Osaka, Japan, at age 117, and Gertrude Weaver of Camden, Ark., at 116. Talley, who knew how to rock a church hat like no other, died at the age of 116. Talley’s death was confirmed by her 77-year-old daughter, Thelma Holloway.

Talley was born May 23, 1899, in Montrose, Ga., but had been living in the Michigan area since 1935. Holloway said Thursday that her mother was recently hospitalized and treated for fluid in her lungs, but died at home, “just where she wanted to be,” according to NBC.

Earlier this year, when asked who Talley credited her long life to, she said only one person.

“It’s coming from above,” she said. “That’s the best advice I can give you. It’s not in my hands or your hands.”

In 2013 President Barack Obama sent Talley a birthday card and said she was “part of an extraordinary generation.”
