ColorLines is reporting that after a dramatic week of vote tallying, Oakland, Calif.'s mayoral race has officially been called. Oakland City Council member Jean Quan beat former State Sen. Don Perata by the narrowest of margins to become Oakland’s next mayor. Quan is the city's first Asian-American mayor, and also the first woman to hold the job. Quan, the daughter of impoverished immigrants, has been a progressive leader in the city, helping to establish UC Berkeley's Asian-American studies program as a college student, and participating in numerous social-justice initiatives, including organizing tutoring programs for students in West Oakland and Chinatown, and helping to fight redevelopment removal of local residents there. A woman after our own hearts.
