Jay-Z has responded to the news that his protégée Rihanna seems to have reunited with Chris Brown, who infamously assaulted her in 2009 and has been relatively unrepentant ever since. The hip-hop mogul reportedly told Brown that he would "finish him" if he ever hurt Rihanna again.
Sounds like a protective gesture by a concerned friend, but it would probably work better if directed at someone with more of a history of behaving like a rational human being.
While they were talking, we can only hope that Jay-Z's and Brown's respective significant others, Beyoncé and Rihanna, were off to the side having their own private — and more effective — chat about the concept of choosing a partner who doesn't have to be threatened into treating you with respect. From the Huffington Post:
Rihanna and Brown were spotted attending one of Jay-Z's eight concerts together at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn earlier this month, and the rapper took the opportunity to have a little conversation with Brown.
The Sun reports that Hova invited them as a couple to his concert, and warned Brown that he would "finish him" if he ever hurts Rihanna again.
"Jay-Z told Rihanna that if Chris is truly making her happy then to go for it," a source told the paper. "He invited them as a couple to his concert in New York and backstage he called Chris to one side and told him if he hurts Rihanna, whether emotionally or physically, it's over for him. He'll ensure it will result in the end of his career."
The 42-year-old rapper hasn't hidden his distaste for Brown since he assaulted Rihanna three years ago. Jay-Z made his stance on Brown pretty clear at the 2011 MTV VMAs, when he refused to clap for the singer's performance.
But the change in Jay's attitude likely comes from trying to accept that Rihanna makes her own decisions about her love life. The 24-year-old recently told Vogue magazine:
"The world hasn't let go," she said of the assault.
