Major updates have emerged in the highly publicized lawsuit against Jay-Z as the rapper continues to fight back against the allegations.
Last year Jay-Z was named in in one of the many civil suits against Sean “Diddy” Combs, as we reported. In the lawsuit, one Jane Doe alleges the disgraced rapper and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter raped her in 2000. Since then, Jay and his lawyer Alex Spiro have aggressively fought back against the claims both legally and through public statements.
Now, after a series of back-and-forths with Doe’s attorney Tony Buzbee, things just got even more intense as Jay filed for a dismissal.
The “99 Problems” rapper filed a motion to dismiss the suit after obtaining permission to do so last week, Variery reports. The motion cites “a series of inconsistencies” in Doe’s account, specifically referring to the NBC News interview from December in which Doe admitted to making “some mistakes” in the retelling of her story.
The motion also includes a request to “impose a monetary sanction or fee award” against Buzbee and the Buzbee Law Firm, according to the outlet, for “alleging facts without a sufficient investigation or by failing to withdraw those allegations once it is clear that they are false or exceedingly unlikely to be true.”
In a resonpsone obtained by the outlet, Buzbee said that he and his client will not be “bullied or intimidated,” adding that they would be addressing “the utter lack of merit with his filing with the Court, rather than with the press.”
“Mr. Spiro and his firm are paid by the hour,” the statement continues. “So, they file a lot of junk with the Court. With each frantic filing, his team reeks of desperation. He and his team think the laws and rules don’t apply to them. They are flat wrong. They also think they can bully or intimidate counsel for victims by filing meritless and frivolous pleadings full of lies and half-truths.”
As we reported, Jay-Z and Buzbee have gone back and forth both via the courts and public statements since Jay was first named in the case at the end of last year. This turn in the case, however, may be a small win for Jay, though time will tell how this will all play out.
This case is just one of several Sean “Diddy” Combs is facing, all while he is currently in custody awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges.
