MSNBC is reporting that the Ivory Coast's incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo is negotiating his surrender, the country's ambassador to France said Tuesday.
Speaking on France Info radio, Ali Coulibaly did not provide any details about the alleged negotiations. The ambassador represents Alassane Ouattara, who the international community regards as the country's democratically elected president.
Ouattara's forces claimed they had taken the residence. However, this was denied by a Gbagbo adviser.
Pro-Ouattara supporters had succeeded in taking much of the country last week, but they faltered upon reaching Abidjan, Ivory Coast's largest city.
With the help of international forces, the armed group pushed its way into the city.
It looks like this conflict is winding down. What's up with people not wanting to give up the throne and needlessly killing thousands in the process? We suppose being free from civil war for the last eight years was just too unsettling. Some folks thrive on conflict, and evidently Gbagbo is one of them. Ouattara's ties to this past weekend's massacre of people in Duekoue doesn't bode well for the future of the Ivory Coast.
