It’s Showtime! Here’s Our 2024 Summer Movie Preview
‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,’ ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ lead our list of summer films we can’t wait to see.
June 28: ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’
Lupita Nyong’o and Djimon Hounsou star in this prequel that tells us what happened when the monsters with supernatural hearing abilities first appeared.
July 3: ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ - Netflix
Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley is back in Beverly Hills to help out Billy Rosewood with a case, and he’s still causing a ridiculous amount of trouble and property damage.
July 11: ‘Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black’ - Prime Video
In typical Tyler Perry fashion, Ava (Meagan Good) is a woman who thinks her marriage is ideal until she finds out her husband (Cory Hardrict) is actually a bad guy.
July 12: ‘Descendants: The Rise Of Red’ - Disney+
The fourth “Descendants” film finds China Anne McClain’s Uma taking over as Auradon Prep’s principal. She invites Red, the Queen of Hearts’ daughter, to join, which leads to major trouble. The real headline here is that Brandy is finally returning as Cinderella, along with Paolo Montalban as Prince Charming. It’s past time for our Princess to be officially recognized within the canon.
July 12: ‘Sing Sing’
Oscar nominee Colman Domingo stars alongside formerly incarcerated actors as they explore the humanity and dignity they find in a prison theater program.
July 12: Dandelion
Kiki Layne stars in the title role as an aspiring singer who falls in love with another artist and finds new inspiration for her music.
July 26: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman bring their complicated, yet hilarious, friendship to the big screen in the third entry of the “Deadpool” franchise. This time around, the multiverse is explored as Deadpool officially enters the MCU.
July 26: ‘The Fabulous Four’
Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally and Sheryl Lee Ralph are friends who take an unexpected trip to an old friend’s (Bette Midler) surprise wedding. These kinds of movies usually include plenty of middle-aged woman shenanigans.
Aug. 9: ‘Borderlands’
Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis lead a star-studded cast in this film adaptation of the popular video game series. Movie versions of video games don’t traditionally go well, but the trailer for this one looks funny.
Aug 16: ‘The Union’ - Netflix
Halle Berry is a spy who recruits her high school sweetheart, a construction worker played by Mark Wahlberg, for an adventure through Europe. Let’s be honest: This is probably exactly what we think it is.
Aug. 16: Alien: Romulus
The latest entry in the “Alien” franchise goes back to the beginning. The movie follows a crew on a spaceship as they explore an abandoned space station and comes across, you guessed it, a terrifying monster. We imagine things go horribly downhill from there.
Aug. 23: ‘The Crow’
After a winding road through development hell, Bill Skarsgård stars as Eric, the rock star turned undead vigilante, with FKA twigs as his true love, Shelly. Nothing will top the emotional resonance of the cult classic starring Brandon Lee, but we’ll try to keep an open mind.
Aug. 23: ‘Blink Twice’
Zoë Kravitz makes her directorial debut with this thriller starring Naomi Ackie as a cocktail waitress who heads to a tech billionaire’s (Channing Tatum) private island, where things go terribly wrong.
