“It,” according to Alexis De Veaux, is black feminism. The retired professor of women’s studies at the State University of New York, Buffalo, says she does not question the legitimacy of popular black feminists like Beyoncé or the Kerry Washington character on Scandal. In a Left of Black interview with host Mark Anthony Neal, De Veaux says that young women need exposure to feminist ideals, and she talked about her reaction to bell hooks’ recent claim that Beyoncé is a “terrorist.”
De Veaux is also the author of the recently released novel Yabo.
