Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith!”
If you haven’t watched the Prime Video series yet, stop reading now!
Fine, you’ve been warned.
When we heard that Donald Glover was making a new version of the 2005 action movie “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” we wondered how closely it would resemble the film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The answer is not very close. Other than the fact that Glover and co-star Maya Erskine are married spies named John and Jane Smith, the TV series has very little in common with the blockbuster.
Whether you’ve already binged all eight episodes, or you’re wondering if you want to jump into the charming, fun series, you’re probably curious about how the show changes things up from the film. With that in mind, we’ve done the work for you and have a helpful list of the five major differences between the two “Mr. & Mrs. Smiths.”
They’re Strangers
When we first meet the couple in the movie, they’ve been married for a little while and have settled into an uncomfortable rut. In the series, they’re total strangers who are matched up, knowing nothing about each other, not even their real names. Their “get to know you” phase offers a different perspective on the complicated relationship.
Everything Else Is a Mystery
Though Brad and Angelina’s characters are very clear about who they work for, the new John and Jane have no idea what they’ve gotten themselves into. The mystery adds another interesting layer to their awkward situation.
It’s More Emotional Than Sexy
While Glover and Erskine have an awkwardly cute chemistry, they don’t have the explosive sexiness that’s seen in the movie. This isn’t a bad thing, as it gives the series an opportunity to focus on how the characters are handling the chaos of their new lives. Despite the trappings of the spy stuff, it’s a more authentic relationship story.
Glimpses of the Real John and Jane
The movie never goes beyond the surface of the unhappy couple, who happen to be assassins. In the series, we get small peeks at the real people behind John and Jane. This leads to actual character development, which makes the story richer and more captivating.
Donald Glover’s Wardrobe
You already know that if Donald Glover is playing a charming spy, he’s going to look good doing it. He’s somehow dressed perfectly for every occasion, but always looks cooler and more elegant than everyone else. He doesn’t need it, but I hope he kept some of John’s wardrobe when the series wrapped.
The show is the fascinatingly weird blend of comedy, drama and action that you expect from Glover. Instead of remaking or rebooting the movie, the team went in a different direction and made it an awkward, yet relatable, relationship story, where the leads just happen to be spies. The fact that the film and series really have nothing to do with each other, makes the show feel fresh and unique, leading to a more enjoyable experience.
All eight episodes of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” are now available on Prime Video.
