Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the 43-year-old Iranian woman facing execution by stoning for adultery, confessed on state TV to infidelity and helping her supposed lover kill her husband. In an interview broadcast today, Ashtiani also skewered her lawyer for publicizing the case and bringing shame on her family. Ashtiani's lawyer, who was granted refuge in Norway, told reporters that Ashtiani was forced to make those statements in order to save her life. She only confessed in the first place after receiving 99 lashes. This story has more drama in it than an episode of As the World Turns. Whether she committed the crime or not, death by stoning is inhumane, and that's a story that will never change.
