A 24-year-old Des Moines, Iowa, woman received the surprise of a lifetime this week when she stepped into the shower to ease stomach pains and stepped out holding a newborn girl, according to the De Moines Register.
Brittany Young told the news outlet that she may have misunderstood a hospital worker in January. Instead of being 12 weeks pregnant then, as Young believed, she had 12 weeks left, the report says.
"I got in the shower. Not even five minutes after that, I was like, my stomach is still hurting. Not even five seconds [later], I had to push," Young told the Register. Shortly thereafter, her daughter, Miracle, arrived on Wednesday, weighing 6 pounds, 8 ounces, the report says.
"This baby's eyes were open; she was just sitting there staring at me," Young told the Register. "She didn't cry or anything. I was in shock. I was like, there's a baby here."
Young, who has three other children, asked a friend in the living room to call an ambulance. The police report says police found Young's friend holding the child, and Young was in the shower. They were both taken to Mercy Medical Center.
"I've been in shock for the last couple of days because I didn't expect a full-term baby," Young told the newspaper.
