On Friday, Princeton University professor Eddie Glaude Jr. called out folks who voted for Donald Trump on MSNBC’S “The 11th Hour.” Last week, Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election.
Though host Stephanie Ruhle said Trump supporters were concerned about the economy, Glaude begged to differ in the now viral clip.
Ruhle stated that she didn’t agree with Glaude’s assessment, and that Americans were uncomfortable by the left’s “identity politics.” That, coupled with the economy, also led to Trump’s victory, according to Ruhle.
However, Glaude respectfully disagreed and said that most Americans voted for Trump because they felt that “whiteness” was under threat.
“So there’s this sense, right, that whiteness is under threat – the demographic shifts. The country is – all of these racially ambiguous children on Cheerios commercials are confusing the hell out of me,” he remarked.
Ruhle retorted, “Eddie, a lot of people voted because their life’s too damn expensive.”
That remark seemingly set Glaude off. “You’re telling me, Stephanie, that all of these people who believe that their lives are – that bread is too high and eggs are too high – that they voted for a convicted felon, a guy who said we can grab the P?”
Ruhle doubled down on her stance. “I’m not defending it...people are saying ‘life’s not fair. I’m not doing well,’” she said. “’My son’s still living in the basement. I can’t seem to get a job. I don’t like the status quo. I’m voting for something else.’”
Glaude wasn’t trying to hear it — like, at all.
“I do not believe that. I cannot believe that. And the reason I think you believe it is because you don’t want to believe that that’s what’s really motivating them,” he replied.
“They voted for a crook, a person who they know is doing everything to undermine the so-called country that they love. And then they’re telling us the BS, that it’s economics. We know that’s not true. We know it’s not true. And we’ve got to raise our kids in this sh*t.”
Glaude’s passion was palpable in the clip, and reflected what a lot of folks are thinking.
