I’m really confused right now, but I’m just going with it and writing this piece anyway. As it turns out, actress Mindy Kaling and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) may have a dinner date coming up after a strangely flirtatious Twitter exchange about the actress’s show.
In a recent episode of The Mindy Project, Kaling’s character threw major shade at Booker’s beloved home city, Newark, and his former position as its mayor, prompting the unlikely conversation between the two.
Kaling’s character is shown saying, “Cory Booker? I can’t believe he came. I guess anything to get out of Newark, huh?”
Booker, an avid tweeter, took to the social media platform to voice his hurt feelings—“Ouch!”—over the Newark slander, while saying, “I still [insert heart emoji] U.”
Kaling responded shortly afterward, saying that if her character throws shade at something, “it means we know it’s cool,” and thanking him for the love.
Booker then responded with, “You are making my day! Thanks for the clarification. And if the [heart emoji] is really mutual... Come have dinner with me in Newark? #PleaseSayYes.”
Kaling then said, “Yes. Now let me get the PATH train schedule.”
Of course, at the PATH mention, PATH—the transit system that serves New Jersey and New York—got involved on its own Twitter account, sending the couple(?) the current schedule. But then Booker interrupted again and said that Kaling was well worth a Lyft pickup.
So yeah, that’s the whole interesting saga. If you can make sense of this, let me know, because I am seriously equal parts amused and befuddled.
