We never thought we’d say this, but we might officially be suffering black girl magic fatigue. After all, we’ve spent almost every day this August reporting on a seemingly endless rollout of Fall Fashion issues featuring black models and celebrities on their covers; so many, we’re actually beginning to glaze over a bit.
Scratch that. It’s Friday, and we probably just need a weekend—or at least, a nap. How can we not soak up and celebrate all this black beauty? It’s literally our job here at The Glow Up!
With that in mind, today’s kudos go to Vice’s i-D magazine, who tripled-down on melanin for their fall issue, featuring models Adesuwa Aighewi, Adut Akech Bior and Anok Yai on separate covers for their environmentally-based theme—though the cover’s caption, “imagine you could be the one to change it all,” could easily apply to the sea change in the fashion industry’s approach to inclusion this season (it should also be noted that Akech’s cover and Balenciaga editorial was hot by British-Ghanaian photographer Campbell Addy).
Inside the issue, Akech Bior and Yai join model Eniola Abioro for a series of major black-on-black-on-black fashion moments featuring Prada, Chanel, Givenchy and Balenciaga, with the designers of each speaking on the inspiration behind their dramatic fall collections.
But it’s model-of-the-moment Akech Bior who makes the most appearances in i-D’s fall issue, also modeling a series of T-shirts and hoodies for Balenciaga’s new collaboration with the World Food Programme.
While at this point, all the black girl magic may be beginning to blur together, with all these good looks and good works, it’s honestly hard to ignore i-D’s contribution to this historic season—especially when we’re not sure if it’s bound to only be a seasonal trend.
