Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Nicholson’s parents have decided that blood is not thicker than politics. That’s because they oppose their son’s political views so much that they donated the maximum amount allowed to his Democratic rival, current Wisconsin Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

CBS News reports that Nicholson, a Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is still in a primary battle in Wisconsin against “Republican state Sen. Leah Vukmir, with the winner advancing to take on Baldwin in the fall,” but that didn’t stop Nicholson’s parents, Michael and Donna Nicholson, from giving $2,700 to Baldwin in December. The news site notes that Nicholson was once a Democrat, until he switched sides, and that his parents have a history of donating to Democrats.

Nicholson says in a statement, “My parents have a different worldview than I do, and it is not surprising that they would support a candidate like Tammy Baldwin who shares their perspective,” CBS News reports.

Nicholson, who’s running as a fiscal conservative, promises to rein in spending, added that he became a conservative by choice, “not because I was born one.” Nicholson considers the quickly growing national debt to be a threat to U.S. national security, and as such should probably become a Democrat again, since the Republicans seem to be fine with that crushing debt.
