The Obama love story is one we’ve been following since former President Barack Obama first dipped into American politics. Now that they’re both away from the White House, it seems everyone is paying special attention to former First Lady Michelle and her husband’s relationship.... but clearly, some of y’all got it all wrong!
Now, they’re setting the record straight. As reported by Daily Mail, Michelle announced on Instagram that The Obama Presidential Center is planning to honor Hadiya Pendleton— the Chicago girl who was killed just days after she performed at Obama’s second inauguration. The Obamas will be opening a memorial garden in her honor.
Although heartfelt and serious, Michelle made sure to note she and her husband will be there... together. “She had an extraordinary light that will not be forgotten,” the first lady wrote before emphasizing “and Barack and I look forward to honoring her memory through a dedicated space at the Obama Presidential Center.”
This marks the first time the former First Lady is set to appear at a major event since last year. After the death of her mother in May 2024, Michelle wasn’t too engaged with the public. She did, however make an appearance at the Democratic National Convention in August, where she shared that she almost didn’t make it on stage. “I still feel her loss so profoundly,” she said. “I wasn’t even sure I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight,” she told the crowd.
She and Mr. Obama also headlined multiple events during former Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, but most recently, people have noticed Michelle’s absence. She missed out on President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and even President Donald Trump’s second inauguration.
Sources close to the former first lady said she “doesn’t do anything because it’s expected or it’s protocol or it’s tradition,” according to PEOPLE. And because we all know she can’t stand Trump and all his antics, it was no shocker when the source revealed “There’s no overstating her feelings about [Trump]. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol’s sake,” as The Root previously reported.
The last time she and Trump were in the same room was in 2018 during former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral. So now that it’s been made clear that the only man Michelle has been trying to avoid is Trump, we just wish the internet would kill the rumors and leave Michelle and her man alone!
