Kevin Hart may be one of Hollywood’s go-to comedic actors, but a recent joke he made about college students in Deleware isn’t garnering any laughs. I’ll explain.
During a press stop at “The Breakfast Club” with Charlamagne tha God, DJ Envy, and guest cohost Loren Lorosa to promote his recently released limited series, “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” Hart was joined by executive producer Will Packer to discuss the show. At some point, the conversation went off on a tangent about how people who went to historically Black colleges and universities tend to put a lot of stock into their HBCU experience and hold onto it for a long time.
For context, Will is proud graduate of Florida A&M University (FAMU) whereas Charlamagne received an honorary doctorate degree from South Carolina State University. DJ Envy attended Hampton University. All three of the aforementioned schools are HBCUs. Kevin, on the other hand, did not finish college nor did he attend an HBCU when he attended.
“You know what’s crazy? A lot of old niggas can’t let college go,” Hart began. “[It’s] alot of old niggas that refuse to just accept [the fact that] it’s over.”
“He didn’t go to a historically nothing,” Will fired back.
When Loren chimed in telling Kevin that he didn’t understand HBCU culture and that if he did he’d know that it’s hard to let go, Will subsequently asked her which HBCU she attended.
“I went to Delaware State University,” she answered. To which Kevin retorted: “That is not an HBCU. I know where Delaware State is. That’s just a bunch of niggas on campus. Delaware State University is just a whole bunch of—that’s niggas in Delaware.”
Once DSU students and folks online got wind of Kevin’s comments, they weren’t exactly too thrilled with the comedian.
“I didn’t find Kevin Harts joke on the Breakfast Club inappropriate at all. He got on DSU because of their location. Now with the repping from our standpoint because an HBCU changed us we will always rep it but the outside world can also see it as odd or overboard,” wrote on user on X/Twitter.
“Kevin hart calling out Delaware state,” another said.
Penned another, “Ya’ll was mad at Kevin Hart calling DSU ‘niggas on campus’ and y’all over there shooting up dorms….and the staff not caring.”
The last tweet was in reference to a recent shooting that transpired at their off-campus apartments.
According to U.S. News & World Report, Delaware State currently sits in the numer 10 spot on their Top 10 HBCUs list.
