With the whole world still talking about Katt Williams’ wild appearance on “Club Shay Shay,” you knew it was only a matter of time before the interview got the “SNL” treatment. On Saturday, the long-running sketch comedy series dropped a ridiculous pre-taped parody of the interview. Ego Nwodim was hilarious as Williams and Devon Walker portrayed a spot on Shannon Sharpe. The clip pokes fun at the comedian’s wild claims about Kevin Hart, Steve Harvey and himself, featuring an increasingly over the top series of lies and conspiracy theories.
The sketch opens with Nwodim as Katt saying, “Three things are true about me. I am 5’3, I have never told a lie, and I am 6’3.” From there, things went totally off the rails with assertions that Kevin Hart was created in the Teddy Grahams factory, nonsensical words and crazy Steve Harvey shade.
What made this video work so well was Walker’s understated performance as Sharpe. The way he only occasionally jumped in, and didn’t really push back on Williams’ shenanigans felt very real.
If you’re not one of the 53 million viewers who’ve seen the Katt Williams interview, the skit stems from his scorched Earth comments about Hart, Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, as well as his crazy conspiracy theories and the unbelievable revelations about himself. If you didn’t know better, you would’ve thought the nearly three hour appearance was an “SNL” bit. When something starts out this ridiculous, it’s hard to find a way to make fun of it, but the show absolutely nailed it.
Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who loved the parody, because the real Shannon Sharpe couldn’t have been more excited about the whole thing.
On Sunday, Sharpe and his co-host, fellow former NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, reacted to the sketch on their sports talk show, “Nightcap.” The duo remarked that the ESPN personality was headed for another level of fame now that he’d been featured on “SNL.”
“I can’t believe ‘Saturday Night Live’ fooled ya boy. The dude had a brown tracksuit on just like I had,” Sharpe said.
“You famous now, man,” Johnson replied. “You know what’s the next step after ‘Saturday Night Live?’ You might be hosting the Oscars.”
Shannon probably won’t host The Oscars anytime soon, but he might be open to hosting “SNL.” When a viewer asked if the guys would be interested in leading the Emmy-winning comedy series, both seemed interested. Sharpe claimed he would “take it serious and not laugh” during sketches, but that seems unlikely. This man can’t make it through two hours of “First Take” without cracking, there’s no way he’s making it through “Saturday Night Live” without breaking.
