President Barack Obama and those who know him have long acknowledged the profound impact that growing up in Hawaii has had on him. And yet as plans for an Obama presidential library get underway, lawmakers fear that their state will not appear on the list of possible locations, the Associated Press reports.
Instead they worry that the front-runner will be Chicago, where a young Obama came of age politically in that city’s notoriously rough-and-tumble environment.
That has prompted politicians, civic leaders and others in Hawaii to launch a campaign to urge Obama and his advisers to build the library in the tropical paradise of his boyhood.
