Two years after the fact, the flamenco-style chapeau Beyoncé rocked in her iconic 2016 “Formation” video is still turning some famous heads. Last week, Melania Trump made us wonder if she keeps mayo in her bag (probably) when she donned a wide-brimmed white hat designed by French stylist Hervé Pierre to greet the French President Emmanuel Macron and and first lady Brigitte Macron.
Not to be outdone, this week, Gabrielle Union also got into “formation” (no, really; she called it that) for the premiere of her latest film, Breaking In. Working with stylist Thomas Christos Kikis, the actress paired a vibrant and voluminous retro blouse-and-trouser ensemble from Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2018 collection with a pair of sculptural black satin “F-wedges” by Salvatore Ferragamo and a showstopping wide-brimmed straw hat, the underbrim of which was coordinated to match Union’s ruffled turquoise blouse.
While a wide-brimmed hat is an interesting choice for a movie premiere, most on social media agreed that Union nailed the look, especially since, for whatever reason, pants have never been conventional premiere attire for actresses (Union wore a silk Altuzarra maxi dress to the film’s Atlanta premiere).
So, what’s the consensus? Is this the silhouette we should all be rocking this spring, or is Union just one set of castanets away from a costume? For context, let’s see the outfit sans hat:
Loving Union’s undereyeliner pop of turquoise, and honestly, I am pretty sure I owned an identical pair of pants in 1990. But admittedly, the (fictional) designer “Gordon Gartrell” also comes to mind ...
So did Beyoncé’s hat get this outfit in formation, or nah?
