We called it. Proving, once again, that too much is never enough when it comes to Halloween, Beyoncé debuted a second costume on Wednesday night, this time with a little help from husband Jay-Z.
In a tribute to Olympic track and field greatness, Beyoncé costumed herself as the late, great, always glamorous Florence Griffith-Joyner, fondly known as “Flo-Jo.” And as the perfect counterpart to her costume, Jay dressed as gold medalist and activist Tommie Smith—likely with a silent nod to Smith’s bronze medalist compatriot and training partner, John Carlos—both of whom famously and controversially threw up Black Power salutes while on the dais at the 1968 Olympics.
As for Beyoncé, she embodied three-time Olympic gold medalist (with two silvers) Flo-Jo’s unique and iconic style in a brightly colored, one-legged catsuit. And of course, she accessorized the look with Flo-Jo-like brunette waterfall waves and the track star’s trademark embellished talon-like nails.
Let us not forget though, it’s not the Carters without a photo shoot. Bey gave us track and field realness with a photoshopped background of the track and stands, and even blessed us with an action shot worthy of Flo-Jo herself (scroll through to see Bey in mid-flight).
It’s far from the first year that Queen Bey has come through with multiple costumes, but as usual, the Carters won Halloween—this year, with a timely nod to black excellence.
