Smile, bitch. The Joker ain’t going back and forth with these niggas, he’s living his best life.
“I used to think my life was a tragedy, but now I realize ... it’s a comedy,” remarks Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in a newly released teaser trailer for the upcoming film. This iteration of the infamous Batman villain is a standalone origin story and will not be a part of the current Warner Bros. / DC cinematic universe. It’s not canon, ya’ll. Well, not current canon.
Per Variety:
The movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics, which would give the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren’t included in its current cinematic universe.
And per IMDb, the synopsis is as follows: “A failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and becomes a psychopathic murderer.”
Other than how entertainingly demented this looks, everyone couldn’t help but notice the blackety blackness in the form of Brian Tyree Henry and Zazie Beetz.
Wait, you mean to tell me Paper Boi and Van will be gallivanting around Gotham City with a villainous clown? Sign me up!
But—I’ll say this: I’ve been duped by Warner Bros. deft ability to craft a dope ass trailer and that dopeness not translating to the actual film. Suicide Squad, I’m looking at you. But, the sheer talent in this film has to count for something right? You got my attention. And that’s no joke.
Joker debuts in theaters Friday, Oct. 4, 2019.
