(The Root) — Ester Mae Smith, Angela Taylor and Della Daniels, better known as the Como Mamas, share their hearty voices with the world once again. Daptone Records — the Brooklyn, N.Y., label known for reintroducing classic soul acts such as Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and others to new generations — is set to release the Mississippi gospel trio's album Get an Understanding on Feb. 5.
Having sung together in church since they were children, the group, in their latest effort, perform 13 hymns stripped down to the bare bones in spirited a cappella tracks. An undeniably mature album captures the essence of a traditional choir for worshippers on the go with soul-tingling renditions of Thomas Dorsey's "God Is Good to Me," as well as other rousing songs such as "Thank Him Enough," "Hold Me Jesus" and "God Is Able."
