Arizona Republican congressional candidate Jim Brown, who was roundly criticized last week for comparing modern-day "entitlements" to slavery, has issued an apology, the Huffington Post reports.
Brown, who is running in for a seat in Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District, said in the apology on Thursday that he cares "about every human being on this planet."
He went on to say: "Some people read this to mean that I didn't think slavery was that bad. I believe that slavery is worse than death - yesterday, today and tomorrow. I apologize to anyone I offended."
As The Root reported last week, Brown struck a nerve Wednesday when he compared government spending to slavery in a post on his Facebook page.
Back in the day of slavery, slaves were kept in slavery by denying them education and opportunity while providing them with their basic needs .. Not by beating them and starving them. (Although there were isolated cases if course) Basically slave owners took pretty good care of their slaves and livestock and this kept business rolling along.
His comments couldn't have come at a worse time for the Republican Party. Leaders are in the midst of a major rebranding campaign in an effort to win minority voters for midterm elections and in the future. The need was underscored in 2012 after mostly minority voters returned President Barack Obama to the White House for a second term.
Brown faces fellow Republicans Martha McSally and Shelley Kais in an upcoming race to challenge Rep. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.).
