If you’ve ever aspired to be a DJ, you may want to hop on over to Friday’s Google Doodle and get yourself a history lesson on hip-hop and a DJ tutorial. In honor of hip-hop’s 44th anniversary, Google Doodle is paying homage to DJ Kool Herc and showing you exactly how his “breaks” became famous.

When Herc was 18 years old, during the summer of 1973 in the Bronx borough of New York City, he threw a party, and during his set, he changed it up a bit and didn’t play the full songs but instead threw in “breaks” and only played the instrumentals. Then Coke La Rock hopped on the microphone, and on that night, hip-hop was born.

Friday’s Google Doodle offers not only an animated history lesson narrated by Fab 5 Freddy, former host of Yo! MTV Raps, but also features a customized logo by graffiti artist Cey Adams. The interactive turntables for the tutorial will probably have you getting very little work done, but hell, it’s Friday. No one wants to work anyways.
