Heads of state from 25 countries and thousands of guests flocked to Nigeria's capital of Abuja Sunday to bear witness to the swearing in of Goodluck Jonathan as Nigeria's president and 14th head of state. Flanked by two white-wigged judges and under heavy security, Jonathan took the oath of office as leader of Africa's most populous country. While observers consider the election the fairest in the country's tumultous history, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari is challenging the results.

Just a few years ago, Jonathan was a political unknown as vice president. The illness and eventual death of Umaru Musa Yar'Adua propelled Jonathan into power. He won a full four-year term of his own last month. He faces a throve of troubles, including the perennial issue of corruption, divisions between north and south and religious conflict.
