Talking Points Memo is reporting that Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) helped one of the most widely debunked and far-out conspiracy theories about the health care law find its way into the Congressional Record late Wednesday.
You may have seen a chain mail in which some on the far right believe the health care law creates a private army for President Obama to call up and train on U.S. citizens. TPM challenges the assumption, saying that it is more in line with the thinking of George W. Bush Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, who wanted to create a Ready Reserve Corps of several thousand public health professionals — nurses, doctors — who could be called up to treat people in the wake of an epidemic or a disaster like Hurricane Katrina after 9/11.
That idea came out of a Republican presidential administration, which is why Gohmert and the far right's attempt to lump it onto Obama is incredible. But back to Gohmert.
Gohmert injected the conspiracy theory into the Congressional Record by stating that the president's decision to get involved in Libya may be an effort on his part to "so deplete the military that we're going to need that presidential reserve-officer-commissioned corps and noncommissioned corps that the president can call up on a moment's notice involuntarily, according to the 'ObamaCare' bill." Huh?
That doesn't even sound right or plausible, and is so far-fetched that even right-wing extremists are scratching their heads — or maybe not. Maybe they're introducing foolishness to the Congressional Record to appease uninformed voters who have no knowledge of how government works or what this country will allow a black man — even one who is president — to do.
