Ever wonder why cable TV show host Glenn Beck gets so emotional when he talks about the Founding Fathers and the Constitution? Patriotism aside, the key to his fervor may be found in the "White Horse" prophecy of Mormon Church founder Joseph Smith Jr. Some have theorized that when Beck, who is Mormon, says the Constitution is "hanging by a thread," he's echoing the prophecy that when the Constitution "hangs, as it were, upon a single thread," Mormon elders will sweep in on a white horse to save the day. We're supposed to imagine that Beck would be one of these people sweeping in to save things, and President Barack Obama would be causing the ruination of our country.
This is all speculation by people who have spent a lot of time analyzing Beck's words since Obama came into office, and noticed that the "hanging by a thread" theme comes up often. It also came up during the 1999 presidential campaign of Rep. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who is also Mormon. Certainly, not all Mormon politicians (or talk-radio hosts/march organizers) subscribe to this prophecy. In 2007, past and future Republican presidential prospect and card-carrying Mormon Mitt Romney said the prophecy was not "official church doctrine."
