Joan. Maya. Lynn. Toni. If you’re not familiar with these names, then you’ve missed out on several great years of television. But now you’re in luck because the Mara Brock Akil-created series Girlfriends is headed back to syndication on TV One.

Girlfriends premiered Sept. 11, 2000, and ran on both the CW and UPN networks before it met its demise in 2008. During the series’ run in 2007, it was the longest-running live-action sitcom on network television and one of the highest-rated scripted shows on TV among African-American adults 18-34.
Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones gave black women and men something to look forward to every week. Their characters were upwardly mobile and educated and had a sick sense of fashion. Each had her own quirks that were relatable, and none of their lives were picture-perfect.
For years after the show was canceled and appeared in syndication on TV, rumors would surface that a movie was in the works—and after Tuesday’s TV One announcement, the show’s creator piqued everyone’s interest with a single tweet.
