Last month, Oprah Winfrey told a small group of women attending a Queen Sugar event in Los Angeles that the show isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. And of course, Winfrey kept her word: OWN has renewed the spectacular series for a third season.
Queen Sugar, the series executive-produced by Ava DuVernay and based on the book by Natalie Baszile, is not only a critics’ favorite but is also a favorite of those people who live-tweet it on social media using #GimmeSugar.
In related news, DuVernay is making herself comfortable working with Winfrey and has inked a first-look TV deal with Winfrey’s Harpo Films for television and digital media, according to Deadline.
“I’m so proud of Ava and her ability as a filmmaker to challenge the status quo and push for inclusiveness on-screen and behind the camera,” said Winfrey, CEO of OWN and Harpo. “I love, love, love the work we have been able to create so far. I am looking forward to developing many more meaningful projects together.”
The first project in line for DuVernay’s deal is the five-part Netflix limited series Central Park Five.
Seriously, DuVernay and Winfrey are a match made in heaven.
