Finally, it seems that summer has some intention of appearing—and with it, the appearance of more skin. “Sundress season” is generally best accessorized with shimmering, sexy, sun-kissed skin, but since we know better than to spend too much time in the sun (melanin is no substitute for sunscreen, y’all), we decided to turn to an expert to learn how to give ourselves a gorgeous natural glow up subtle enough for every day.
Enter makeup maven Danessa Myricks, a self-taught artist and expert at mixing and matching pigments—as evidenced by her makeup-artist-beloved line, Danessa Myricks Beauty. When she visited our studio with her kit, she proved so knowledgeable, talented and fascinating that we immediately asked her to return for more tutorials.
But to get us started, Myricks used her own line of products to demonstrate the basics of skin prep (don’t be afraid of oil!), tone matching, “underpainting” and how to make a little highlighter have a big impact (hint: Lay off the Body Lava, y’all).
The result? Aminata, our model, considered herself a no-makeup girl prior to our shoot (with that skin, who wouldn’t?). But after seeing herself in the mirror post-glow up, she was ready to incorporate Myricks’ tips into her daily routine.
Just goes to show you: A little glow goes a long way.
