In a world full of turmoil, we can never have enough Black Girl Magic—and it appears Gabrielle Union will be bringing some over to NBC.
Variety reports that the Being Mary Jane alum will serve as an executive producer on Black Girl Magic, a new comedy series that tells the story of three estranged sisters who learn a mysterious secret about their family history that changes their lives and brings them back to the magical world of New Orleans.
Black Girl Magic is the brainchild of Emebeit Beyene, Crystal Boyd, and Chandra Russell, who you probably recognize from the new Comedy Central series South Side. They also worked together on Downtown Girls in 2013.
Beyene, Boyd, and Russell will all serve as executive producers on the series as well, while Union’s contribution will be through her production company, I’ll Have Another.
Beyene and Russell each took to Instagram to celebrate the project being greenlit.
“This is what dedication looks like. I worked hard for this, man,” Beyene posted. “Cried all year off taking so many L’s. Grateful to my team for believing in me, @gabunion for advocating day in and day out, and most importantly, to those two ride or dies pictured next to me. Let’s do this.
“There was more than one way to have a hot girl summer. Some of us drove the boat while others quietly closed deals,” Russell wrote. “Shout out to the girls next to me who did both. And shout out to me who did it 🤰🏽 and tired. God is good.”
Earlier this month, Union also announced that she’ll be executive producing the one-hour bikini bar dramedy Tips. Shoutout to her for continuing to make moves behind the scenes and creating more opportunities for other black creatives in Hollywood.
