During this year's Olympic Games, Gabby Douglas won a gold medal with Team USA, but she also received unfair criticism. From hearing comments about not showing enough enthusiasm and not putting her hand over her heart while the national anthem was played, you'd think that Douglas' Olympic experience wasn't a great one. But she says she didn't let any of that deter her from enjoying Rio de Janeiro.
In an interview with People, the 20-year-old gymnast said she had a "fantastic" time in Rio. "I had fun. Maybe people weren't being fair on social media, but that's social media for you."
"I just found things to be positive about," she says. "And there's a lot to be happy about. We won the gold medal as a team, and it was just such an amazing experience. I came to the Olympics and won a gold medal! That's still really awesome. I can only do what I can do, and if people want to say their stuff on social media, I can't stop them."
And even though some of social media was harsh, Douglas did take notice of #LOVE4GABBYUSA. "That was just awesome," she said. "It felt really good to have people support me. It was a good reminder that where there is hate, love is more."
As for what Douglas plans to do now that the Olympics are over? It will be the simple things, like spending time at home.
"I'm really looking forward to going home," she says. "Just to have some family time. I can't wait to relax and play with my two dogs.
"And then the Final Five will go out on tour," she adds, speaking of her gymnastics squad. "That will be a lot of fun. It will be fun to hang out with no pressure on us!"
Gabby Douglas proves that no matter what people say, she'll always rise above the criticism.
