The family of Tyre King says that his funeral will take place this Saturday, WOSU reports.
As previously reported by The Root, King, 13, was fatally shot by Columbus, Ohio, Police Officer Bryan Mason on Sept. 14.
Mason, a nine-year veteran of the force, was responding to reports of an armed robbery—in the amount of $10—and a group of teenagers were the alleged suspects. Mason claimed that as he approached, Tyre pulled a BB gun from his waistband that looked like a real firearm, so he opened fire.
An autopsy performed by an independent medical examiner retained by Tyre’s family showed that “it is more likely than not that Tyre King was in the process of running away from the shooter or shooters when he suffered all three gunshot wounds.”
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Activists in Athens, Ohio, set up a memorial for Tyre on the Courthouse steps Wednesday morning.
The funeral service for the 13-year-old will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Church of God on Refugee Road in Columbus.
The family has asked that media cameras be kept out of the service.
