Yahoo is reporting that Fox News has suspended the contracts of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum for 60 days. Fox News said in September that if any of its paid contributors — such as Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum — decided to run for president, the network would sever their lucrative deals.
Recent speculation that Gingrich might form a presidential exploratory committee raised questions about whether his airtime on Fox could be considered a campaign contribution. Fox News anchor Bret Baier said Wednesday on air that "on May 1, their contracts will be terminated unless they notify Fox they are not running for president."
Some say the move was prompted by CNN's John King, who looked at all the potential Republican candidates who have been paid by Fox News in a segment on Monday. Suspending Gingrich and Santorum before they have officially formed presidential exploratory committees suggests that it is already in the works. Who on the Fox payroll is next? Palin, Huckabee? Time is ticking and time will tell.
